How about a mountain hiking in Daisetsuzan National Park when alpine flowers are at their best! Here are some of the mountains in the park.


　
Mt. Asahidake (2,290m) is Hokkaido's highest peak. The mountain is easy to get to and easy to climb.

There is a ropeway (an aerial cableway) that takes you almost halfway up. Along the mountain trail are Meoto Numa (marsh), Sugatami no Ike (pond), and beautiful alpine plants.

Enjoy a great panoramic view from the top of the mountain!

Head for Higashikawa first, then Asahidake Hot Spring Resort where the starting point of the mountain trail is located

By bus
Busses bound for Asahidake Hot Spring Resort via Tenninkyo depart from Asahikawa Station. The first bus departs at 9:00 am.

Mt. Akadake (2,078m) has beautiful snow valleys and a variety of beautiful alpine plants. You can enjoy the magnificent landscape of the Daisetsuzan Range.

[Access]

By car
Route 39 → Change to Route 237 at 大雪湖 (Lake Daisetsu).
A two-and-a-half-hour drive from Asahikawa will take you to 銀泉台入口(Ginsendai Entrance) where the starting point of the mountain trail is located.

By bus
It would be necessary to stay at 層雲峡温泉 (Sounkyo Hot Spring Resort) overnight.

Bus schedule:
  • Outward: Asahikawa Station (departure - 9:05 am) → Sounkyo Hot Spring Resort (departure - 8:32 am on the second day) → Ginsendai.
  • Homeward: Ginsendai (departure - 4:30 pm) → Sounkyo Hot Spring Resort (departure - 5:40 pm) → Arrival at Asahikawa (7:30 pm).

Mt. Furanodake (1,912m) is an active stratovolcano. There is a very popular hot spring called 十勝岳温泉 (Tokachidake Hot Spring Resort) near the starting point of the mountain trail.

Enjoy a great view of 原始ヶ原 (Genshigahara marsh) from the top of the mountain!

By car
Follow Route 237 through 上富良野町 (Kami Furano), then take a different way
(pay attention to road signs not to lose your way) that leads to 十勝岳温泉登山口 (Tokachidake Onsen Tozanguchi - the starting point).

Bus schedule
<Outward>
Asahikawa Station (departure - 7:47 am) → Kami Furano (departure - 9:33 am) → Tokachidake Onsen Tozanguchi (the starting point).

<Homeward>
Tokachidake Onsen (departure - 5:00 pm) → Kami Furano (departure - 7:05pm) → Arrival at Asahikawa (7:54 pm).

  1. Do not climb mountains alone.
  2. Make sure to bring a sweater, gloves, and a raincoat in order to cope with sudden changes in weather conditions.
  3. Take plenty of provisions, including water, for cases of emergency.
  4. Do not forget to enter your name in the list of climbers at the starting point.
  5. Lastly, it is a very good idea to ask mountaineering clubs or outdoor shops about the details of mountain climbing courses.
