Welcome to the City Of Asahikawa
Asahikawa,located in near the center of Hokkaido,is the second largest city in Hokkaido after Sapporo with 360,000 population.
It is a beautiful city surrounded by Taisetsu mountain range with four distinctive seasons.
And there are about 130 rivers and streams including the Ishikari River and Chubetsu River,the source of these rivers are from melting snow of Taisetsu Mountain range,and over 740 bridges in the city.
Asahibashi,a bridge over Ishikari River,has been familiar to people in the city as one of the symbols of Asahikawa since its completion in 1932,and it was also registered as one of the Hokkaido Heritage sites.
The extreme temperature variations, from the scorching summer highs that rise above 30℃ to the freezing winter lows which plunge below -20℃, create delicious agricultural produce and beautifully diverse natural landscape.

In the city center,there is the pedestrian shopping mall called "Heiwa
street Kaimono Kouen" which garnered national attention with the first
pedestrian heaven in Japan.The mall stretches for one kilometer from the
station.All the right shops for shopping or bite to eat lined up in the
road. stroll down the mall enjoying the sculptures along the way and soon
you lead 7-jo Green Avenue, a throng of green light through the city center. |
The Suburbs of Asahikawa

There are many rich natural environment in the suburbs of Asahikawa.We are free to enjoy those beautiful scenery in all seasons.Just outside the urban center one can enjoy the view of vast and meticulously kept farmland stretching out in harmony with nature. A panorama that is characteristic of Hokkaido.

Asahiyama Zoo

Asahiyama Zoo has become one of Japan's most prominent facilities and is visited by people from both Hokkaido and around the country.There are many unique interactive animal viewing facilities here at Japan's northernmost zoo.
The exhibition policy is to provide an environment where each species can use their abilities and space where each animal can relax.At Asahiyama, the cages and aquariums are arranged to display the animals' behavior and habits.For instance, in the penguin house, a submerged tunnel has been installed to allow visitors to observe the birds actually swimming.In addition, the zoo keeps different animals in the same house, in an attempt to duplicate the creatures' natural environment.

Asahikawa Winter Festival

This festival is the largest winter event held in the Northern Hokkaido in early February every year."Taisetsu-zo",a big snow statue,is made in the riverbed of the Ishikari River,the world's largest in size and has also been listed in the Guiness Book of Records.A great number of people throng to the opening fireworks display and the various stalls set up in front of the Great Snow Statue.
